Browns vs Redskins

Over the last few days there have been lots of reports via the usual channels (Twitter, ESPN, SI.com, Rotoworld.com etc) indicating that the Redskins are in hot pursuit to move up from the six overall pick in Aprils draft to the #2 spot to pick Robert Griffin III.

Although (on paper) the Browns have the edge in moving up in the the draft via there 4th and 22nd picks in the first round of the draft, the Redskins are equipped with an owner (Dan "what ever, I do what I want" Snyder) who will do whatever it takes to get what he deems is necessary for his team.

Someone had brought up a good point early today why the 'Skins could very well win this bidding war for the Rams #2 pick.

  • Redskins would defiantly commit to the Rams well before the Browns would.
  • Rams may want a deal sooner rather than later as the market for a QB may thin out some once Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn find new homes.
  • Although the Browns have around $25-$27million in cap space this season, the 'Skins have $45-$48 million. Which obviously gives them a lot more leverage in free agency to fill whatever vacancies that they would lose in giving the Rams multiple draft picks this year and next.

On the other side of the coin, the Cleveland Browns just gave a well deserved new contract to MLB D'Qwell Jackson. Rumor also has it that the Browns recently offered RB Peyton Hillis a three year $10 million, incentive-laden contract. Like I mentioned in a previous post, tying up some of these loose ends could give us a much clearer image of what the Browns are planning to do in free agency and in the draft.

I did see a post yesterday that the Browns did in fact have conversations with the Rams on moving up, however we aren't going to know anything until either minutes before the draft or as the commish comes up to the podium for the Rams pick to let us all know that they have traded with (insert team here).

Other recent tidbits:

Citing a team source, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the Dolphins' motivation to surrender a draft-pick package for Baylor's Robert Griffin III "isn't very high."
The Dolphins have "some level of interest" in trading up for Griffin, but it's cost prohibitive. Miami would have to fork over more picks than the Browns or Redskins because their first-rounder holds less value. The Dolphins will instead aim for Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn as the top two options at quarterback. Feb 28 - 5:30 PM

SI.com's Peter King confirms the Rams have already received a trade "feeler" for the No. 2 pick from a team "you would never expect."
Let the intrigue begin. Our initial guesses are the Chiefs, Eagles, Broncos, and perhaps the Jets. Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel and GM Scott Pioli were blown away by RGIII over the weekend. Griffin told King he "really enjoyed" his time with Andy Reid, and the Eagles have a pair of second-rounders in addition to Asante Samuel and DeSean Jackson to dangle in front of St. Louis. Regardless, the Browns and Redskins remain the heavy favorites to land RGIII. Feb 28 - 3:41 PM

The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Terry Pluto believes the price for the Browns to trade up to No. 2 overall is both 2012 first-round picks as well as the 2013 first-rounder.
NFL Insider Charley Casserly agrees, suggesting a trio of first-rounders could clinch the deal. With rookie salaries deflated, multiple teams desperately in need of a franchise savior, and the top two quarterbacks set in stone, the Rams will simply take advantage of supply-and-demand while throwing Jimmy Johnson's point-value trade chart out the window. Pluto's suggestion lends more credence to the weekend report that the Redskins realize they will need to part with their top three 2012 picks and "at least" their 2013 first-round pick to land RGIII. Feb 28 - 3:03 PM

The Washington Post reports the Redskins are willing to pay a "handsome price," including first-round picks this year and next year, to land Baylor's Robert Griffin III.
In addition to the pair of first-rounders, the Redskins are also willing to part with multiple picks in the "upper to mid-round range," matching the compensation the Chargers received for Eli Manning back in 2004. Should the Skins get outbid by the Browns, they will reportedly target Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill as a fallback option at No. 6 overall. The team is expected to pursue a veteran QB, such as Kyle Orton, to pair with RGIII or Tannehill. Feb 28 - 1:19 PM

Shaun Rodgers and Some Insight on the Draft

A customer of mine told me once one of the greatest words to live by some years ago. “Never let your meat loaf.” Back when I heard this I only thought of it in a sexual context.   But after hearing of the release of DT Shaun Rodgers this past week I was able to apply this great piece of advice from a half senile old man in a different way. The 10 year veteran had played only sparingly over the past two seasons.   He ended the 2009 season on the I.R. (as so many others did as well).   This past season sometime during training camp, Rodgers became gimpy and turned into the Lance Armstrong of stationary bikes.   During the regular season Mr. Rodgers was lucky to play 20 snaps a game. 2009 stats: 11 games played, 11 game starts, 36 tackles (9 assisted) 2 sacks. 2010 stats: 15 games played, 1 game start, 17 tackles (3 assisted) 2 sacks. Shaun's salary in 2010 was $6.9 million, his base for 2011 was 5.5 million.  Really didn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. With

The Pooh Has Hit The Fan

Its been about a week since my last post. But its been very difficult to write about something that isn't worth writing about. So what I am going to do is simply post everything interesting I have been able to come across during the past few days. Oh, in case you didn't hear, the Browns let the door hit the ass of general manager George Kokinis on his way out. AFC North Stock Watch Adam Schefter talks about Cleveland getting rid of GM George Kokinis and what this means for Eric Mangini ( video ) The BROWN OUT Eric Barton going on I.R.? Mantarded's Master Plan ? The Browns should lose there Monday Night Football spot. Tedy Bruschi Defends Eric Mantarded. Browns Fans Say Owner Has Dogged Determination. Browns Owner " sick " about state of Browns, but won't fire Mantarded.

Josh Gordon: Not that difficult of a decision.

Josh Gordon is making steps to set himself up for reinstatement by the NFL. But do we want to see him in a Browns uniform again? He is still just 25 years old. He may be in shape, but is he in football shape? Does he actually realize that this is his last chance? Do we even care because the Browns will be lucky to even win two games this year? My thoughts (for what little they are worth), just move on. We are beyond rebirth again at this point. To me he is just taking up a roster spot from someone who hasn't screwed up 10 times and/or from someone who actually loves to play the game and wants to show up to practice and become a household name on Sundays.  Hugh Jackson and his coaching staff need to realize this and work with the loaded WR roster we currently have. Mold these youngsters into what you want and need and roll with it. Why: Because, Josh  has not played an NFL game since December 21, 2014 and has been suspended for 27 of his last 32!  Next time, I will start
