As much as I would like to see Colt McCoy excel as a Brown in the NFL. I don't think that this is going to happen. As a fan of professional football and that of the Cleveland Browns, I want to see every single draft pick excel to a pro-bowl type level. Obviously that would never happen (in any scenario).
So, part of me wants to see Colt given another year to mature WITH SOME OFFENSIVE WEAPONS to see what he can really do. However when you have the fourth overall pick and you have a very good shot at picking a much more (all around) athletic QB like Robert Griffin III, its increasingly difficult to keep telling yourself that you would NOT be OK with Colt holding a clipboard next season.
Yes, the Browns lead the league in dropped balls, (no thanks to Greg Little) and we had to rely on a practice squad castoff from the Texans to sure up on running game for a couple weeks with all the injuries at running back. ( Chris Ogbonnaya ) Would a stud WR like Justin Blackmon be a sweet addition instead? You can argue that AJ Green made Andy Dalton's job much easier in Cincinnati this past season.
The issue again with the Browns is that we have too many holes to fill. And if they don't start filling them quickly there are also a lot of seats that are going to need filled at Browns Stadium. In all seriousness, if we don't start winning, they may want to take the name of the team and change it to the Blackouts.
I don't like to get real deep with mock drafts at this time of year. I wait a little closer to the combine to get more information before I pick a candidate to put next to that #4 overall pick in April. However, here are some things to think about:
Peyton Hillis will probably be wearing a different uni next season.
MoMass has been hurt much of his career and when on the field, does not create any separation from defenders.
A fast, strong presence at LOLB would be a welcomed addition.
Pairing up Joe Haden with another young talented CB wouldn't be too bad either.
How is Eric Steinbach doing since back surgery? Do we now need to look into a RG along with a REAL RT?
With the recent hiring of offensive coordinator Brad Childress , we may be able to start painting a picture of how the offense may be run and what the focus is going to be on. I'm putting my money on nothing changes and a year from now we are trying to hire another head coach who doesn't want to call the plays in to the QB.
