How many WR's are we keeping?

I was watching Sports Time Ohio's "Training Camp Daily" and a good point was brought up that I had only just started pondering. How may WR's do we need? Who is getting cut/traded/or put on 1 of a number of physically unable to perform lists?

For most of training camp really only a handful of names have surfaced, some for good reasons and others well, read the previous post. Lets start with what I have heard thus far;

Mike Furrey: A former arena league star, once part of the greatest show on turf (won Superbowl with the Rams and played with Torry Holt and Issac Bruce). Then moved to Detroit where he caught 98 passes for over 1000 yards just two years ago. Now he comes to a run first offense with a team full of young talent and a starting QB dilemma, or will he be the Browns version of Wes Welker? KEEPER

Donte Stallworth: Lets just not go there, Moving on. GONE

David Patten: Ah yes, the 35 yr old speedster now in his second stint with the Brownies. I have to be honest, I have not heard one thing about him since he signed with us months ago. No news is good news? I doubt it. Future here is in doubt for Patten. GONE

Braylon Edwards: Talent is there, that's always been obvious. Contract year for #17, if history tells us anything, big numbers come from those who are specifically motivated. B.E. wants to cash in, So I expect the drop to well...drop off some and back over 1000 yds #17 will be. KEEPER

Brian Robiskie: This former Buckeye is of course the hometown favorite. Being around football his whole life and having a father who coaches in the NFL, his mental approach to the game is what makes up for him not being the fastest or strongest WR in this past years draft. Many people have him starting opposite of Braylon Edwards. Lets just wait and see on that one. KEEPER

Mohamed Massaquoi: Our 3rd pick in the draft ( #50 overall). The former Bulldog is a big, physical receiver with the starter potential. Though he has a penchant for dropping passes. Ok I know that we already have someone that drops passes. However, Massaquoi, is smart, played in the SEC and played in many big games. On top of that from what I have heard this youngster seem right at home so far playing in the slot in camp thus far. KEEPER

Paul Hubbard: Spent last season on the practice squad. No real surprise there. He was drafted as more of a project than anything else from the last coaching regime. However this former Wisconsin track star can vertically stretch the field possibly allowing for underneath completions. Still a project and because he is part of Romeo's players, the future does not look to promising in Cleveland. GONE

Lance Leggett: This is really all I know about the guy: Signed by Cleveland as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 1, 2008. No official stats. GONE

Syndric Steptoe
: Selected by the Browns in the seventh round (234th overall) at the 2007 NFL Draft. 16 games, 5 starts. Not much to speak of here, but he does bring some (although minute) NFL experience. He does also bring to the table an additional return man. KEEPER

Jordan Norwood: Signed as an undrafted free agent by Cleveland on May 1, 2009. This is my sleeper pick, I don't know what it is about this kid yet, but I like him (maybe its a Big Ten thang) but if he can show Mangini that he is valuable on special teams, on the roster he will go. KEEPER

Who are we missing...
AH YES

Joshua Cribbs: Lets forget about the contract dispute and assume everything has been ironed out and he doesn't hold out during the regular season. Is he a QB, a WR, a "Wildcat" option, a defensive back in a nickel/dime package, or just one hell of a special teams player? Whatever this guy brings to the table, he can be elusive, make defenders miss tackles, and allow for mismatches on the field. KEEPER

Shaun Rodgers and Some Insight on the Draft

A customer of mine told me once one of the greatest words to live by some years ago. “Never let your meat loaf.” Back when I heard this I only thought of it in a sexual context.   But after hearing of the release of DT Shaun Rodgers this past week I was able to apply this great piece of advice from a half senile old man in a different way. The 10 year veteran had played only sparingly over the past two seasons.   He ended the 2009 season on the I.R. (as so many others did as well).   This past season sometime during training camp, Rodgers became gimpy and turned into the Lance Armstrong of stationary bikes.   During the regular season Mr. Rodgers was lucky to play 20 snaps a game. 2009 stats: 11 games played, 11 game starts, 36 tackles (9 assisted) 2 sacks. 2010 stats: 15 games played, 1 game start, 17 tackles (3 assisted) 2 sacks. Shaun's salary in 2010 was $6.9 million, his base for 2011 was 5.5 million.  Really didn't take a rocket scientist to figure ...

Browns Could be Key to Where Mariota Lands

We all know by that our Brownies currently have picks 12 and 19 in next weeks draft. There are probably countless ways that the Browns could pull something off where we add talent and depth to this team or trade away all there picks for the next 2 years and only have a spread offense QB to show for it. I say if the Eagles will give Chip Kelly the power to make crazy trades, why not try and take advantage of that? Move down a few spots, gain extra picks and just make this team better from top to bottom instead of just focusing on one or two positions. However I don't see Sam Bradford doing any sort of sign and trade to the Browns. He does not want to play in Cleveland, even as the away team. Maybe we could even pull off a trade with the Chargers to get Phillip Rivers. He isn't my most favorite player in the world but compare him to what we have he looks pretty good. Plus you could plug him right in and play from day one. From Draft Insiders- – Expect the talk of teams...

The Pooh Has Hit The Fan

Its been about a week since my last post. But its been very difficult to write about something that isn't worth writing about. So what I am going to do is simply post everything interesting I have been able to come across during the past few days.
