Browns Trim Roster to 52. Mangini on Jamal Lewis

The Browns made 23 roster moves this afternoon, trimming their roster to 52 players, one below the NFL limit.

The Browns waived 18 players and terminated the contracts of five: DB Hamza Abdullah, RB Noah Herron, DB Corey Ivy, WR David Patten and TE Aaron Walker.

Waived were FB Charles Ali, DB Brandon Anderson, QB Richard Bartel, DB Tra Battle, LB Beau Bell, OL Branndon Braxton, LB Titus Brown, OL Dustin Fry, DL Adam Hoppel, WR Paul Hubbard, RB Chris Jennings, WR Lance Leggett, OL Pat Murray, WR Jordan Norwood, OL Kurt Quarterman, DL Brian Schaefering, OL Isaac Sowells and DL Santonio Thomas.

So all the speculation of Jamal Lewis being cut was just hear say. But the season is still early.

To also be noticed 2008 4th RD pick Beau Bell was released. He seemed to get burried on the depth chart and looked to be nothing more than a special teams player.

Also to note, QB Richard Bartel was cut. He was listed 4th on the depth chart but had a very solid game against Chicago this week. Both players should find themselves on another roster here soon.

But based on the team’s roster and an offseason bonus paid to Lewis, cutting the team’s leading rusher in 2008 didn’t add up. Therefore, when the 6 p.m. cut deadline passed, Lewis was still on the roster as the Cleveland’s starting tailback entering the regular season.

"One thing that happens during any transitional time in the league is there’s always speculation," Mangini said. "I think Jamal has a lot to contribute, and I’m looking forward to seeing him as we go through the season."

Mangini added that Lewis' work ethic and ability to mentor younger running backs are two major pluses. Lewis has helped tutor rookie tailback James Davis, who put together a great preseason and is expected to team with Lewis as Cleveland’s primary rushers this year.

On a fun note, Browns former defensive lineman Shaun Smith who was picked up by the Detroit Lions did not make the 53 man roster.

Shaun Rodgers and Some Insight on the Draft

A customer of mine told me once one of the greatest words to live by some years ago. “Never let your meat loaf.” Back when I heard this I only thought of it in a sexual context.   But after hearing of the release of DT Shaun Rodgers this past week I was able to apply this great piece of advice from a half senile old man in a different way. The 10 year veteran had played only sparingly over the past two seasons.   He ended the 2009 season on the I.R. (as so many others did as well).   This past season sometime during training camp, Rodgers became gimpy and turned into the Lance Armstrong of stationary bikes.   During the regular season Mr. Rodgers was lucky to play 20 snaps a game. 2009 stats: 11 games played, 11 game starts, 36 tackles (9 assisted) 2 sacks. 2010 stats: 15 games played, 1 game start, 17 tackles (3 assisted) 2 sacks. Shaun's salary in 2010 was $6.9 million, his base for 2011 was 5.5 million.  Really didn't take a rocket scientist to figure ...

The Pooh Has Hit The Fan

Its been about a week since my last post. But its been very difficult to write about something that isn't worth writing about. So what I am going to do is simply post everything interesting I have been able to come across during the past few days. The Ongoing QB Competition/Dilemma/Nightmare

I caught the following on a CBS Browns message board earlier today and thought I would share. Normally I don't take much from these, but there are several good points made. Enjoy..... I just got to see his press conference from yesterday, and it sure sounds to me like he has no intention of letting either Anderson or Quinn establish any kind of rhythem at all. Expect a similiar QB rotation to what we endured last Saturday night.....WHY? I understand that he wants to play the match-up game, but how can a QB get the feel for the offense if he's yanked every other drive? The two quickest to reason ideas would be: 1. Both quarterbacks are extremely talented and choosing one over the other is like picking Tom Brady over Peyton Manning . 2. Both quarterbacks are extremely un-talented and it's like having to pick between Alex Smith or Akili Smith. Personally, I have two views on the situation: 1. Mangini wants to create as much value as possible for Derek Anderson so he...
